Back at work
I went to work last Sunday night having dreaded it this whole week. Would I know what to do? What if it was busy? What if I had an emergency, could I handle it? Come to find out, the answer was yes and no. Work turned out to be work. I remember now why I had wanted a 3 month vacation in the first place. I had a patient that was a one-on-one (meaning I didn't have to take any more patients as long as I had her), but she was definitley demanding, aside from her condition. She was a patient of family practice residents, which means she had dumb and dumber taking care of her. Most people that get assigned to them are too stupid themselves to realize the incompetence of these people we call doctors. But this one had a brain and wanted me to get in the middle of it. Now, I don't mind being the patient advocate, and unbeknownst to her, I had already fought many a battle for her out of the room. But she wanted me to essentiallly fire her doctors and find another one. Well, easier said than done. That starts a whole bunch of political crap (which it did), without her actually getting to change doctors. So in the end, I was still stuck in the middle, kissing butt for 12 hours to the family and doing my best to keep the dumb doctors out of her room until delivery (which she finally did at 04:44 a.m.). Then it was charting, and cleaning up, and yes, I missed many things, but I will do better next time.
Now the other thing I learned while at work....You will only have a few very good friends in a lifetime. Some you may call friend until such a time presents that true colors are shown. That is the test. Such was proven. So, once again, I will cling to those that have proven their loyalty over and over, and I will confide in them, and include them in our little lives. For those that can't seem to understand, or perhaps don't hold family and friends as close as they claim, I will continue to be civil, but that's about it. What a waste for someone to throw away such a gift as friendship. As I get older, it only becomes more precious to me.
And for those of you who have checked out our site and noticed the differences, that would be compliments of Bill. He wanted our site to be 'cool' looking, and he put in our bio info. He has not yet felt the need to spill his guts like me, but someday I'm sure the need will come.
